YEREVAN, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A regional exercise to mark the 30th anniversary of the Spitak Earthquake kicked off here on Wednesday, the Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.
The simulation exercise was organized by the United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).
A total of 160 people participated in the exercise, including 17 urban search and rescue teams, 12 medical teams, and the United Nations Disaster Assistance and Coordination (UNDAC) team.
Secretary of UN INSARAG Jesper Holmer Lund said exercises of this kind are important because they aim to reduce disaster risks and increase the preparedness of the population at national and international levels.
The Spitak Earthquake took place on Dec. 7, 1988 in the northern part of Armenia, killing at least 25,000 people. Enditem
