British stocks down 1.44 pct

LONDON, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- British stocks dropped on Wednesday, with the benchmark FTSE 100 Index down 1.44 percent, or 100.92 points, to close at 6,921.84 points.

Ashtead Group, a British industrial equipment rental company, was the worst performer in the blue chips, losing 5.83 percent. Melrose Industries, a London-based company that specialises in buying and improving underperforming businesses, dropped 5.05 percent. NMC Health, a private healthcare services provider, fell 5.05 percent.

Persimmon, one of the UK's house builders, soared 7.05 percent, the top gainer of the blue chips. Berkeley Group Holdings and Barratt Developments increased by 5.98 percent and 5.10 percent, respectively. Enditem
