KABUL, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) had declared that all votes cast during the Oct. 20 parliamentary elections in Kabul constituency were invalid, an ECC official said Thursday.

Alireza Rohani, spokesman and secretary of ECC, told reporters at a press conference here that alleged widespread fraud and vote rigging as well as irregularities during the polls have damaged the transparency and credibility of polls in Kabul and led to the declaration.

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) of the country has yet to make comments on the announcement. However, if the IEC agreed with the ECC decision, new elections will be held in Kabul province.

About 2,767 complaints were registered in Kabul after the polls, according to Rohani.

The long-delayed elections for Wolesi Jirga or lower house of the Afghan parliament were held on Oct. 20, with more than 2,500 candidates vying for the chamber's 249 seats.

Nearly 800 candidates were contesting for over 30 seats allocated for Kabul.

IEC has announced the preliminary results of many of the constituencies so far except the results from Kabul amid allegation of fraud and irregularities.

The IEC officials told local media that IEC will announce its stance on the decision soon. Enditem
