UNITED NATIONS -- The UN General Assembly on Thursday failed to adopt a U.S. drafted resolution condemning Hamas.

Backed by U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, the draft was going to condemn Hamas' rocket attacks against Israel, and it was the first drafted UNGA resolution to condemn the Palestinian resistance. (UN-Hamas-Resolution)

WARSAW -- One person died and 44 others were injured in a bus accident near Sucha Gorna in Lower Silesia Province, southwestern Poland, local media reported on Thursday.

According to Polish news website RMF24, the accident occurred around 9pm on Thursday when a bus drove off road and fell over on the entryway to S3 Road near Sucha Gorna. (Poland-bus-accident)

ATHENS -- A rally staged by students' unions and leftist parties in central Athens on Thursday to mark the 10th anniversary of the killing of a teenager by police fire ended in violent clashes between hooded youth and anti-riot police, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

Ten protesters have been detained, but no injuries were reported by police.

Groups of anti-establishment demonstrators pelted rocks and makeshift petrol bombs at policemen, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd. (Greece-Rally-Clashes)

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir -- An Indian army trooper and a border guard were killed while another wounded Thursday in an exchange of fire with Pakistani troops on Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir, officials said.

"Today Pakistani troops resorted to an unprovoked cease-fire violation in Machil sector on LoC. Our side strongly retaliated to the firing and in the exchange one soldier on our side was killed," Col Rajesh Kalia, an Indian army spokesman said.

According to officials, two border guards were wounded in the exchange of fire in Sunderbani, out of them one later on succumbed. (India-Pakistan-LoC)

NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks traded sharply lower on Thursday as fears for economic slowdown continued.

At midday, the Dow erased 551.02 points, or 2.20 percent, to 24,476.05. The S&P 500 decreased 50.54 points, or 1.87 percent, to 2649.52. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 69.88 points, or 0.98 percent, to 7,088.55.

The Cboe Volatility index, widely considered the best fear gauge in the stock market, rose 18.03 percent to 24.48 in morning session on Thursday. (US-Stocks-Lower) Enditem
