BERLIN, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Werder Bremen returned to winning ways after beating bottom side Fortuna Dusseldorf with two-second half goals at the curtain raiser of the 14th round in Bundesliga on Friday.

The "Green-Whites" assumed control from the kick off and pressed Dusseldorf into their own territory. Milot Rashica collected the first chance for the hosts after testing Dusseldorf goalkeeper Michael Rensing from the edge of the box.

Bremen's efforts paid off with 20 minutes played when Kevin Mohwald slotted home Max Kruse's square pass from 16 meters to break the deadlock.

The hosts controlled the proceedings on the pitch but still Bremen had to swallow the equalizer before the break, as Dodi Lukebakio made no mistake to convert a handball penalty from the spot in the 43rd minute.

After the restart, Werder gained the upper hand but were unable to produce clear-cut opportunities whereas Dusseldorf should have grabbed the lead in the 58th minute, but Rouwen Hennigs pulled wide from promising position.

Bremen head coach Florian Kohfeldt made three changes and his substitutions got rewarded as substitute Martin Harnik tapped home a rebound from substitute Johannes Eggestein to make it 2-1 on the scoreboards in the 71st minute.

Dusseldorf were shocked and Bremen kept it bowling as substitute Joshua Sargent put the result beyond doubt after heading home for the 3-1 lead seven minutes later.

With the result, newly promoted Fortuna Dusseldorf stay on the last place of the standings meanwhile Werder Bremen jumped on the 7th place for the moment.

"We wanted to win the game tonight and it was a highly deserved victory against a deep defending team," Bremen head coach Kohfeldt said.

The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: Schalke face front-runners and rivals Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich host newly promoted Nuremberg, Bayer Leverkusen see Augsburg, Freiburg encounter third placed Leipzig, Wolfsburg clash with Hoffenheim and Hertha Berlin take on Eintracht Frankfurt.
