ISTANBUL -- The Turkish coast guards on Monday captured 112 illegal immigrants on a boat off southwestern Turkey in the Aegean Sea.

The boat was intercepted by the coast guards near the Bodrum district in Mugla province, the forces said in a statement. (Turkey-Illegal Migrants)

SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan -- Two police had been confirmed dead after a group of Taliban militants attacked a security checkpoint in Afghanistan's Jawzjan province on Sunday, deputy to provincial police chief Kamaludin Yawar said Monday.

The Taliban insurgents, according to the official, stormed a police checkpoint in Bazgak village of Faizabad district late Sunday night, killing two local police and injuring another. (Afghanistan-Taliban)

PARIS -- Agents of the regional customs administration in Caen, northwestern France, have seized 1,662 kg of cocaine in the commercial port of Caen, the French Ministry of Public Action and Accounts said Monday in a statement.

According to the statement, the cocaine, packaged in packs of about one kilo, was concealed in a container from Brazil. The market value of the drug seized on Dec. 6 is estimated to be more than 70 million euros (about 79.83 million dollars) at wholesale price and before being cut. (France-Customs-Cocaine)

BEIRUT -- Caretaker Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk revealed Monday that the Internal Security Forces (ISF) had thwarted terrorist attacks during the parliamentary elections in May targeting places of worship and military positions in Lebanon, local media reported.

"The ISF protected Lebanon against two huge terrorist attacks by thwarting the smuggling of bombs from Idlib in Syria to Lebanon," Machnouk was quoted as saying by Elnashra, an online independent newspaper. (Lebanon-Terror)
