MANILA -- The Philippine Congress granted President Rodrigo Duterte's request to further extend martial law and the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in Mindanao for a period of one year to Dec. 31, 2019, to quell a "continuing rebellion" in the southern Philippine region.

After deliberating for almost four hours in a special joint session on Wednesday, lawmakers from both the Senate and the House of Representatives voted 235-28-1 in favor of another one-year extension of martial rule in Mindanao.(Philippine-Martial law)

SEOUL -- South Korea was in consultation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to hold a groundbreaking ceremony within this year for railway and road connections across the inter-Korean border, Seoul's unification ministry said Wednesday.

BANGKOK -- A Thai police officer has been arrested on charge of killing a Frenchman following a brawl in Sukhumvit area of Thailand's Bangkok.

Immigration Bureau Commissioner Surachate Hakparn said on Wednesday that the policeman-turned-gunman, identified as Police Warrant Officer Kantapong Huadsri, attached to Lumpini police station, had fatally shot the French national, only identified as Malik, 35, in the head at a shophouse in Sukhumvit 13 area of Watthana district on Tuesday night.(Thailand-Police-Frenchman)

NEW DELHI -- The fourth Partners' Forum, known as Partners' Forum 2018, was held here on Wednesday, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the global meeting on infant and maternal health, officials said.
