LUSAKA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Thursday.

-- The Zambian government says the twinning of Chinese towns with Zambian provinces will spur development in the southern African nation.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Malanji, in remarks delivered when a delegation from Shandong Province paid a courtesy call on him that headway has been made in the twinning of 10 provinces of Zambia with Chinese provinces. (Zambia Daily Mail)

-- More than 5,000 teenagers in eastern Zambia's Chipata district got pregnant in the third quarter of this year, a senior government official has said.

District Commissioner Kalunga Zulu said the district recorded a total of 17,530 pregnancies, out of which 5,456, are being carried by those below 20 years. (Times of Zambia)

-- Zambia's main brewer has commended authorities over recent actions to thwart smuggling of alcoholic beverages at border entries.

Zambia Breweries Plc country director Jose Moran said the efforts by the country's revenue agency, the Zamia Revenue Authority (ZRA), to curb the rising trend in smuggling of alcohol beverages is commendable as colossal sums of money in tax evasion was being saved. (Daily Nation)

-- Tobacco farmers in eastern Zambia's Chipata district have presented a petition to the government calling for a reversal of a decision to ban tobacco firms from running tobacco sales floors.

Ken Mbambara, a spokesperson for the farmers, said the government should revoke the statutory instrument banning tobacco firms from running floors because no consultations were conducted and that the move will affect tobacco growers. (The Mast) Enditem
