NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks opened higher on Thursday as Wall Street was optimistic about the prospect of possible trade deals between the United States and its trading partners.
Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 70.79 points, or 0.29 percent, to 24,598.17. The S&P 500 was up 10.07 points, or 0.38 percent, at 2,661.14. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 52.33 points, or 0.74 percent, to 7,150.64.
Shares of Caterpillar, a company with high overseas revenue exposure, gained 1.23 percent, in early trading. Another trade-sensitive stock Boeing also advanced.
On the economic front, in the week ending Dec. 8, the advance figure for U.S. initial jobless claims, a rough way to measure layoffs, decreased 27,000 from the previous week's revised level to 206,000, lower than market forecasts, the Department of Labor reported Thursday.
Meanwhile, the more stable 4-week moving average was 224,750, a decrease of 3,750 from the previous week's revised average. Enditem
