DAMASCUS -- Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov has stressed his country's resolve to support Syria to surpass all of the troubles caused by the more than seven-year war, the pro-government al-Watan newspaper said Sunday.
"We are determined to stand by the side of Syria to overcome all the woes that it has been through over the past seven years," the Russian official told al-Watan in an interview.

TOKYO -- Since China adopted its reform and opening-up policy in 1978, it has made greater contribution to and played an increasingly important role in the United Nations (UN) and international affairs, said former UN Under-Secretary-General Yasushi Akashi.

BAGHDAD -- Iraqi President Barham Salih said Sunday that he legally relinquished his British citizenship in accordance with the provisions of the Iraqi constitution.
Luqman al-Faily, spokesman of Salih's office, said in a statement that "the legal procedures for his (Barham Salih) waiver of British citizenship have been completed."

QALAT, Afghanistan -- About five Taliban militants have been killed in a premature blast in restive southern province of Zabul, local police said on Sunday.
"The killed militants were trying to plant an improvised explosive device (IED) along a road on outskirts of provincial capital Qalat city late on Saturday. But the IED detonated prematurely, killing the five on the spot," Mohammad Mustafa Mayar, provincial police chief, told Xinhua. Enditem
