SYDNEY, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Australian sports star Majak Daw has been pulled from the Yarra River by emergency services late on Monday night, after an apparent fall which left him with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 27-year-old Australian Football League (AFL) player moved to Australia in 2003, becoming the first Sudanese-born player to appear in the top tier league.

Police responded to calls that a man had fallen from the 25-meter high, traffic bridge at around 11pm on Monday, dispatching rescue crews to the area.

Daw's current club, North Melbourne, confirmed in a statement that the footballer is recovering in hospital and asked for privacy for the family.

"At this stage the full extent of his injuries are unknown, however he is in a stable condition," the statement said.

After being moved to a defensive position last season, Daw shone for the club, recognised for his impressive high ball catches.

In the wake of the incident, North Melbourne veteran player Wayne Schwass criticized the AFL for failing to combat mental health issues which he says are widespread in the sport. Enditem.
