BANGKOK, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- A bomb attack and ensuing gunfire killed one police officer and injured five others in Thailand's deep south, reports said on Tuesday.

The attack happened late Monday night just opposite to a police station in Narathiwat province, according to the reports.

The bomb explosion was followed by gunmen attacks on a police vehicle, an officer from the police station said Tuesday morning.

Explosives of more than 20 kg and M16 guns were found on the scene. The injured were sent to a hospital early Tuesday and have left. The cause of the attack was under investigation.

Narathiwat is one of south Thailand's three Muslim majority border provinces that have been haunted by gun attacks and bombings.

The region was a Malay Muslim sultanate and separatist tensions have simmered for decades. Insurgency has killed more than 6,500 people since 2004. Enditem
