MANDERA, Kenya, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Four Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) soldiers were injured on Tuesday after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off on a military van they were traveling in along the Somalia border.

The incident happened at 3 p.m. at the border point 4 in Mandera along the Kenya-Somalia border.

Kutwsa Olaka, Mandera county commissioner survived the IED as he was traveling in a separate vehicle in the convey with the KDF patrolling the border.

"I cannot link the incident to the al-Shabaab as we all know they have sympathizers living in our midst making it hard to conclude who attacked our convoy," said Kutswa.

He added that an unknown assailant encroached the border and planted the device targeting the KDF officers patrolling the border.

Kutswa said that nobody has been arrested in connection with the attack but security agents say they are following crucial leads to apprehend suspects behind the incident.

The government has constructed a security wall along the Somalia border to deter attacks from the Somalia-based terror group of the al-Shabaab.

The militant group has in the past attacked residents of Mandera during the Christmas festive period killing security agents and government officials. Enditem
