BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Former Argentina and Liverpool winger Maxi Rodriguez has rejoined his former club Newell's Old Boys, the Argentine side said on Thursday.

Rodriguez, who turns 38 next week, arrives on a free transfer after ending an 18-month spell with Uruguay's Penarol.

"You always go back to your first love. We're happy that you have come home," Newell's said in a social media post.

This will be Rodriguez's third spell with Newell's, having last represented the Superliga Argentina outfit from 2012 to 2017.

He made 49 appearances across all competitions for Penarol and scored 15 goals. A veteran of three World Cups, Rodriguez has been capped 57 times for Argentina's national team, having last represented the Albiceleste in 2014.

Newell's are currently 13th in the 26-team Superliga Argentina standings, 18 points behind leaders Racing Club approaching the season's midway point. Enditem
