HONG KONG -- Issuing the first cold weather warning in winter this year, the Home Affairs Department of the government of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Saturday opened 18 temporary shelters for people in need.

The temperature dropped sharply across Hong Kong on Saturday with the minimum temperature at 11 Celsius degrees in the urban areas and a few degrees lower in other areas. The average temperature of winter in Hong Kong this year was around 20 Celsius degrees.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, cold weather will persist for over a week with winds and rains, and is expected to continue over the New Year holidays. (Hong Kong-Cold Weather Warning)

JAKARTA -- Indonesia has experienced a total of 11,577 earthquakes at various magnitudes throughout 2018, significantly higher than 6,929 ones recorded last year, a senior official at Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said here on Saturday.

"It means there is a drastic increase of up to 4,648 more earthquakes in 2018 if compared to 2017," Head of the earthquake and tsunami section at BMKG Rahmat Triyono said.

He said that strong earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.1 to 7.0 occurred 12 times, while one powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude occurred on Sept. 28, devastating part of Central Sulawesi province's capital Palu and triggering a tsunami. (Indonesia-Quakes-2018)

MANILA -- A landslide caused by rains from a tropical depression buried alive three people in the Philippines' Legazpi city in Albay province, south of Manila, government officials said on Saturday.

Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal said a three-year-old boy, a 20-year-old girl and a 26-year-old man were killed when their house in San Francisco village was hit by a landslide on Saturday morning. (Philippines-Landslide-Toll)

YANGON -- China's Huawei telecommunications company and Myanmar's Rectors' committee signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Saturday for ICT talent development under the management of the Education Ministry.

The agreement covers cooperation on establishing ICT diploma course system, sponsoring "Seeds for the Future" program, establishing the Huawei Authorized Information and Network Academy, providing ICT Talent Scholarship to outstanding university students, organizing the Youth Open Day at Huawei Customer Solution Innovation and Integration Center as well as assisting in ICT related scientific research in Myanmar. HANOI -- Vietnam strongly condemned the bomb attack on a tourist bus in Cairo, Egypt, where innocent Vietnamese nationals were killed or injured, a Vietnamese foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Saturday.
