SKOPJE, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Macedonian former director of the Administration for Security and Counterintelligence Saso Mijalkov received house arrest from Skopje Criminal Court, Macedonian Information Agency (MIA) reported on Sunday.

According to MIA reports, the house arrest motion was submitted to the Skopje Criminal Court by the Special Public Prosecution (SPO).

Mijalkov is one of the defendants in the so-called "Empire" case to be put under house arrest.

The SPO is conducting investigations on 13 individuals, including Mijalkov, for criminal association, damage or privilege of creditors, abuse of office, fraud and money laundering.

After the decision, Macedonia's Special Public Prosecutor Katica Janeva declared that she is confident that the people who are now under house arrest did not pose a flight risk.

According to Janeva, the decision to replace detention with house arrest to several defendants in SPO cases was positive for the rule of law and reforms implemented in Macedonia.

On Nov. 20, Skopje Criminal Court ordered the detention of Macedonian former secret police head Saso Mijalkov. The 30-day detention order was further extended later.

Mijalkov was arrested one week after his cousin, former prime minister Nikola Gruevski, fled the country. Enditem
