PYONGYANG, Jan. 1 (Xinhua)-- Tens of thousands of Pyongyang residents gathered at Kim Il Sung Square on Monday night to watch the New Year performance and New Year countdown.

The artistes and teachers from famous art troupes like the Mansudae Art Troupe, the Phibada Opera Troupe, the National Folk Art Troupe and Kim Won Gyun University of Music performed on stage as part of the New Year celebrations.

Most of the attendees were young people and students. Some parents also accompanied their children to watch the performance and fireworks.

"I'm excited and look forward to the New Year, which will be better than last year," a university student told Xinhua.

"This is my first time to attend the New Year celebrations and I'm sure our motherland will be stronger and greater in the New Year," another student said.

The crowd burst into delightful cheer when fireworks lit the sky as the New Year was ushered in.

A fleet of lighted drones wrote "Happy New Year" in the sky above the square.

The performance ended with the song "Ardent Desire" sung by all performers. Enditem
