MANILA -- At least 139 people were injured by firecrackers during the New Year celebration for 2019, the Philippine government said on Tuesday.

DHAKA -- Nearly 300 newly elected members of Bangladesh's parliament will take oath on Jan. 3, a government official said on Tuesday.

The Election Commission will publish the final results of Sunday's general elections within a day or two in a government gazette before the swearing-in of the newly-elected members of the parliament, said Bangladeshi Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, also president of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, an ally of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling Grand Alliance. SEOUL -- South Korea on Tuesday welcomed the New Year's speech by Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Seoul's unification ministry said in a statement that the government hailed Kim's speech in which the DPRK leader showed his stance that his country will continue efforts for the Korean Peninsula's complete denuclearization, the establishment of permanent peace, and the expanded development in relations with South Korea. BANGKOK -- Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn will be crowned in coronation ceremonies on May 4-6, the Bureau of the Royal Household said on Tuesday.

KABUL -- At least 184 Afghan civilians were killed and 94 injured in clashes and terrorist attacks in December 2018 in the militancy-hit country, a monitor group reported on Tuesday.

"The CPAG statistics show civilian casualties have been reported in 40 incidents from 15 provinces of 34 Afghan provinces. Based on the statistics, a total of 278 civilians including women and children suffered fatalities as 184 of them have been killed and 94 others injured," independent Civilian Protection Advocacy Group (CPAG) said in a statement.
