GENEVA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- In 2019, the world of work will face enormous challenges including in the multilateral system, International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Guy Ryder said Wednesday ahead of the ILO's 100th anniversary.

"The year that is beginning will bring great challenges to for the multilateral system of which the ILO is the oldest member," said Ryder in a statement.

When it was founded in 1919 in Geneva to work for social justice, the ILO had 44 members; now it has 187, said Ryder, noting the organization "matters to all people."

The ILO is a United Nations agency that sets international labor standards and promotes social protection and work opportunities for all.

"We have a remarkable 100 years of achievement sustained by the combined determination of governments, workers, and employers to advance the cause of social justice, by making the world a fairer, cleaner and more prosperous place to live and to work," said Ryder in his message.

In 1969, the ILO received the Nobel Peace Prize for improving fraternity and peace among nations, pursuing decent work and justice for workers, and providing technical assistance to other developing countries.

"It is surely not beyond our capabilities to the build the future of work we want, a future with decent jobs for all," said Ryder who was elected head of the ILO in 2012.

"For too many people the world of work falls far short of their reasonable expectations. Uncertainty is high, and levels of trust are all too low," he said. Enditem
