KHARTOUM, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Thursday accused foreign trends of conspiring against Sudan and seeking to destabilize the country.

"The external conspiracy continues. There has been an economic siege, and we have lost our main source of oil," he said, adding that "nevertheless, Sudan remained steadfast."

Al-Bashir made the remarks when addressing a gathering of Sudanese Workers' Trade Unions, Pensioners and Women Associations at the Friendship Hall in Khartoum.

He further vowed to improve the livelihood of the Sudanese people through increasing salaries of workers, providing houses for workers and improving the situations of the pensioners.

Since Dec. 19, 2018, various areas in Sudan, including Khartoum, have been witnessing popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.

According to government statistics, 19 people have been killed during the popular protests. Enditem
