DAMASCUS, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Turkey-backed rebels brought in reinforcements to the western countryside of the Syrian city Aleppo on Saturday after losing their areas to the al-Qaida-linked groups, a war monitor reported.

This came a day after the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured the areas in the western countryside of Aleppo after four-day battles with the Nour al-Din al-Zenki, which is a part of the Turkey-backed National Liberation Front, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) based in the United Kingdom.

A group of the Turkey-backed rebels reached the western outskirts of Aleppo from the Afrin area, to prepare for another round of battles to retake what it had lost to the HTS, which is the umbrella group of the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front.

Meanwhile, the SOHR said that Russian warplanes carried out 11 airstrikes on the areas in western Aleppo countryside.

The HTS militants were also trying to advance in the southern countryside of the northwestern Idlib province, the last major rebel stronghold in Syria.

The progress of the al-Qaida-linked groups came as Turkey and Russia were discussing the future of the northern Syrian areas, including the re-opening of the official Damascus-Aleppo highway, which runs through Idlib.

A day earlier, the rebels in the western countryside of Aleppo fired mortar shells on Aleppo, causing damages. Enditem
