BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.26 percent, at 2,526.46 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.12 percent lower at 7,391.65 points. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.36 percent to close at 1,263.51 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 39.75 points, or 0.15 percent, to 25,875.45 points on Tuesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 25,688.5 and 25,960.89. Turnover totaled 74.48 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 9.50 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday buoyed by a solid lead from Wall Street overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 165.07 points, or 0.82 percent, from Monday to close the day at 20,204.04.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going up 0.65 percent or 20.14 points to close at 3,122.94.

A total of 1.29 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 880.45 million Singapore dollars (about 648.25 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 207 to 170.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher Tuesday. A recovery in the final hour of trade ensured that benchmarks maintained their positive streak. Pharmaceuticals gained the most.

The benchmark S&P, BSE Sensex closed at 35.980.93, 130.77 points or 0.36 percent up compared to its previous close at 35,850.16.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market finished higher on Tuesday, with broad gains across the index and particular support from the major banks.

At the close of market, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 39.20 points or 0.69 percent at 5,722.40, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 38.80 points or 0.68 percent at 5,783.30

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Tuesday moved up 1.28 points, or 0.08 percent, to close at 1,594.00 points.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Tuesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,672.76, down 6.41 points or 0.38 percent, and the Emas was at 11,461.17, down 38.05 points or 0.33 percent.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 101.27 points on Tuesday, down 0.66 points or 0.65 percent from the previous trading session.

Nearly 25.7 million shares worth 287.7 billion Vietnamese dong (12.5 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Tuesday. Specifically, foreign investors bought over 631,100 shares valued at around 10.7 billion Vietnamese dong (466,783 U.S. dollars), and sold nearly 1.1 million shares valued at 4.9 billion Vietnamese dong (210,913 U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 887.44 points on Tuesday, down 2.2 points, or 0.25 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

Over 97.955 million shares worth 2.272 trillion Vietnamese dong (98.8 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange.

MANILA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Philippine shares closed 1.10 percent lower on Tuesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 85.54 points to 7,702.12. The all-share index went down by 37.80 points, or 0.81 percent, to 4,634.17.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Tuesday unchanged compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index remained at 813.70 points after closing.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower Tuesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) dipped 11.83 points, or 0.58 percent, to settle at 2,025.27. Trading volume stood at 390 million shares worth 4.7 trillion won (4.2 billion U.S. dollars).
