RIYADH, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Saudi police exchanged fire with a group of fugitives in a security operation in the eastern region of Qatif, killing and arresting several of them, Arab News daily reported Tuesday.

In the operation carried out on Monday, the fugitives refused to surrender and opened fire at the security personnel first, the daily said.

The fugitives are wanted for targeting the police and disturbing development projects in the region, it added.

The report did not provide details about the operations or the number of the killed and arrestees.

No official authorities have yet confirmed the report.

Qatif, one of few Saudi areas dominated by the minority Shiite community, suffers on-and-off violence by Shiite youths against police personnel and residents. Enditem
