HAVANA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- A collision between a train and an interprovincial transportation bus left 12 people injured Tuesday in Bayamo, the capital of Granma province, local media reported.

Captain Ernesto Gonzalez, first transit official in the territory, said the accident happened at 5:15 a.m. and involved a tourism bus carrying Cuban passengers and a train traveling on the Bayamo-Grito de Yara route.

Preliminary reports showed that the driver of the bus, which was traveling from Havana to Santiago de Cuba, did not stop at a railroad crossing.

As of noon Tuesday, only the driver remained in critical condition.

Traffic accidents are the fifth cause of death in Cuba.

According to the most recent data, between January and October 2018, more than 8,200 collisions were reported which left 553 dead and nearly 6,300 injured. Enditem
