BERLIN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Strong winter weather has caused floods in northern Germany and snow chaos and traffic disruptions in many southern parts of Germany on Wednesday.

Snowstorms led to blocked streets and cut-off a town as German authorities expect more road closures for safety reasons. Many schools will remain closed for the rest of the week.

About 350 people are still trapped in Berchtesgaden, a small town in Bavarian, due to heavy snowfall. The affected residents have to be supplied with food by trucks. Further snowfalls are expected for Bavaria, some of which will be very heavy, further increasing the risk of avalanches.

Disaster alarms have been declared in the upper Bavarian district. In the Bavarian Alps, the second highest avalanche warning level is in effect. Already on Tuesday numerous lifts and slopes in Bavarian ski resorts had to be closed.

Air traffic was also interrupted due to weather conditions. Freezing rain and hail paralyzed operations at Cologne/Bonn airport temporarily for around an hour on Wednesday morning.

For northern Germany, the federal maritime and hydrographic agency BSH has issued a storm surge warning for the northern Baltic coast.

The Germany's National Meteorological Service (DWD) predicts wind speeds of 80 km per hour at the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Enditem
