German government passes draft law to address child poverty

BERLIN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- German federal government on Wednesday passed the draft of the Strong Family Law which provides higher child benefits to address child poverty.
German Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey and Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil jointly presented the reform plan on Wednesday that will benefit roughly 4 million children living in low-income families.
The draft law included an array of benefits, including raising a child benefit supplement by 15 euros to 185 euros per child per month, raising the allowances for buying school necessities from 100 euros to 150 euros per child per semester, and free school meals and transport, among other benefits.
Among them, the child benefit supplement is offered to parents who, although earning their own income, still do not make ends meet, according to the family ministry that emphasized their support to working parents.
According to figures form the Ministry of Family Affairs, around 13.4 million children live in Germany, and 4 million children live in families where money is scarce. Enditem
