SANTIAGO -- At least nine people, including an infant, were killed and another 11 injured in a road accident that involved a car, a trailer and van in southern Chile's Lake District.

BAGHDAD -- The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Wednesday paid a surprise visit to the Iraqi capital Baghdad to meet with Iraqi leaders to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation.

During the day, Pompeo met with the Iraqi President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim before he left to the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan in the north of the country. (Iraq-U.S.-Pompeo)

TOKYO -- The Japanese government said Wednesday an uninhabited island in the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima will be purchased by March to be used by Japanese forces, as well as for U.S. military aircraft to practice carrier landings.

Japan's top government spokesperson told a press briefing on the matter Wednesday that along with U.S. military drills to be held on Mage Island, located 12 km west of Kagoshima's Tanegashima Island, the government is also mulling the use of the island for Japan's Self-Defense Forces' operations. UNITED NATIONS -- The UN humanitarian chief on Wednesday called for progress on the humanitarian front in Yemen following the implementation of a ceasefire that largely restored Hodeidah to calm.

"I cannot yet report you that the wider humanitarian situation in Yemen is any better. It remains catastrophic," UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock told the Security Council. (UN-Yemen-Humanitarian)
