BRUSSELS, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Some 3,000 high school students from all corners of Brussels converged in the city on Thursday for an unauthorized protest to demand more concrete action to deal with climate change, local media reported.
The students skipped school and rallied under the slogan "Spijbelen voor het klimaat" ("flunk school for the climate").
Although the demonstration had not received any form of police clearance, Belgian police estimated that around 3,000 students attended in total.
The demonstrators, worried about not being heard enough on climate issues, demanded strong measures from politicians.
For them, the fight against climate change must be placed "at the heart of political priorities in the next legislature" and allow Belgium to "play a leading role in the field on the international scene," reported Belgian newspaper La Libre.
The two of this movement invite students to skip school each week, but discourage spontaneous demonstrations like this one.
The teenagers' call for a "school strike" is inspired by the action of Greta Thunberg, a young Swedish climate activist who became famous for her now-weekly school strikes in front of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm. Enditem
