KIEV, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian army will meet standards of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) by the next year, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Thursday.

"By 2020, the armed forces will act in accordance with NATO standards," Poroshenko tweeted.

In June 2018, the Ukrainian parliament adopted the law on national security, which is aimed at reforming Ukraine's defense sector to bring the country's armed forces in line with NATO standards.

The legislation defined Ukraine's integration into NATO as one of the "fundamental interests" for Kiev.

In 2014 when pro-West authorities came into power in Ukraine, the parliament revoked Ukraine's non-aligned status, paving the way for its membership in military blocs.

In 2017, Ukraine officially declared the course towards joining NATO. Enditem
