KIEV, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Traffic accidents declined in Ukraine last year thanks to tougher traffic rules that in particular introduced harsher punishment for violations, a senior Ukrainian official said Friday.

Olexiy Biloshitsky, the first deputy head of the patrol police, said on Facebook that Ukraine recorded 150,120 traffic accidents in 2018, down 7.6 percent from a year before.

At the same time, the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents declined by 2.4 percent to 3,350 from a year before, and injuries dropped by 10.9 percent to some 31,000 in the Eastern European country.

Last year, Ukraine adopted new traffic safety measures including increasing the manpower of patrol crews and introducing a new camera system to monitor road traffic.

In addition, it introduced stricter speed limits in cities and higher fines for speeding, drunk driving and violation of other road safety regulations. Enditem
