U.S. active rigs count unchanged this week

HOUSTON, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The number of active drilling rigs in the United States remained at 1,075 this week, or 136 more than that this time last year, according to the weekly data released by the Baker Hughes on Friday.

The number of rigs operating in U.S. oil fields fell by four to 873 rigs this week, and more than half of the oil rigs were located in the Permian Basin region of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The number of rigs drilling for gas increased by four to 202 rigs.

The Houston-based oilfield services company reported that the number of land drilling rigs increased by two to 1,052 rigs. The number of inland waters drilling rigs decreased by one to 2 rigs, while the number of offshore drilling rigs decreased by one to 21 rigs.

The number of directional drilling rigs decreased by four to 62 rigs, while the numbers of vertical and horizontal drilling rigs increased by one and three to 65 and 948 rigs, respectively.

The U.S. state of Oklahoma decreased the most by four to 136 rigs, while Pennsylvania and West Virginia led the gains with increasing by two to 49 and 14 rigs, respectively.

Oil prices dropped on Friday. The West Texas Intermediate for February delivery fell 1 U.S. dollar to settle at 51.59 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while Brent crude for March delivery plunged 1.2 dollars to close at 60.48 dollars a barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange.
