ABUJA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) said it has deployed a high-level election observation mission to monitor next month's general elections in Nigeria.

In a statement reaching Xinhua in Abuja on Saturday, the EU said it appointed Belgian politician Maria Arena as the chief observer of the EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) for the general elections scheduled for Feb. 16 and March 2.

The deployment of the observation mission followed an invitation by Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission.

A Core Team of 11 EU election analysts had arrived in Nigeria since Jan. 4 and would stay in the country until the completion of the electoral process, the EU statement said.

The team would be joined by 40 long-term observers, who will be deployed across the country later this month. Enditem
