Sudanese gov't can be changed by elections, not demonstrations: president

KHARTOUM, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir said on Monday that demonstrations would not change the government, but the ballot boxes in the elections slated for 2020 can.

Al-Bashir made the remarks when addressing a mass rally in Nyala, the capital city of Sudan's South Darfur State.

He reiterated that his government would not tolerate with saboteurs, saying "any person who wants the good for the country would not perform sabotage and burning acts."

"We spoke that there is an economic problem, and we are working to resolve it," he added.

Since Dec. 19, 2018, various areas in Sudan, including the capital Khartoum, have been witnessing popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.
