Canadian stock market closes higher

TORONTO, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Canada's main stock market closed higher Monday due to strength in healthcare issues.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index rose 36.35 points, or 0.24 percent, to end the day at 14,975.53 points.

The Canadian dollar dropped 0.05 cents to 0.7532 U.S. dollar.

On the market, a total of 104 issues rose while 131 ones fell. There were eight new highs and no new lows, with total volume of 228.5 million shares.

The energy group climbed 0.27 points, or 0.18 percent while the financials sector edged up 0.08 points, or 0.03 percent.

Among the healthcare stocks, Aurora Cannabis jumped 6.1 percent to 8.99 Canadian dollars while Canopy Growth surged 12.5 percent to 57.10 Canadian dollars

In the industrial group, Canadian National Railways rose 2.2 percent to 108.29 Canadian dollars while Air Canada gained 1.1 percent to 27.51 Canadian dollars.

In the gold sector, Goldcorp advanced 7.9 percent to 13.88 Canadian dollars while Barrick Gold fell 1.4 percent to 16.29 Canadian dollars and Kinross Gold lost 1.2 percent to 4.21 Canadian dollars.

The most heavily traded shares by volume were Aurora Cannabis Inc., Goldcorp Inc. and Canopy Growth Corp.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. soared 53 cents, or 6.26 percent, to 9.00 Canadian dollars on 32.8 million shares.

Goldcorp Inc. surged 97 cents, or 7.54 percent, to 13.83 Canadian dollars on 9.6 million shares.

Canopy Growth Corp. rocketed 5.67 dollars, or 11.17 percent, to 56.45 Canadian on 9.2 million shares. Enditem
