Ukraine's flag air carrier sees sharp increase in passenger number in 2018

KIEV, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), the country's largest air carrier, said on Tuesday it has recorded a 15-percent increase in passenger number last year due to the fleet renewal and the opening of new flights.

In 2018, UIA served more than 8 million passengers, with about 53 percent of them being transfer passengers, the company said in a statement.

Last year, UIA purchased three long-range Boeing 777-200 ER and four medium-range Boeing 737-800 aircraft, According to the statement.

The air carrier opened new flights to Denmark's capital Copenhagen, Egypt's Cairo, India's Delhi, the city of Toronto in Canada and an internal flight between Kiev and Vinnytsya city in central Ukraine.

The UIA airline, which flies from its hub Boryspil International Airport in Kiev, currently operates more than 1,100 domestic and international flights per week, with nonstop services from Ukraine to 38 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Since 2015, UIA has been operating a direct flight between Kiev and Beijing. Enditem
