NAIROBI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Kenyan club Gor Mahia one million Kenyan shillings (10,000 U.S. dollars), and suspended its defenders Joash Onyango and Haron Shakava for two matches for unsporting behavior.
This means that Onyango and Shakava will have to watch from the sidelines as their teammates take on Cameroon's New Star FC in their Confederation Cup match on Sunday.
The pair's ban came after Gor played against Lobi Stars of Nigeria last month, where the Kenyan team lost 2-0 and were bundled out of the CAF Champions League on away goals, having won the tie's first leg 3-1 in Nairobi.
"Gor Mahia could elect to contest this decision, but they must pay the fine within 60 days," Ryamond Hack, president of the CAF Disciplinary Board said in a statement.
Gor's deputy secretary general Ronald Ngala expressed optimism that CAF would clear their two defenders to feature in the match against New Star.
"We will engage CAF and see if the two will be cleared to play pending the appeals," said Ngala.
Onyango is charged with using abusive language towards the referee, while Shakava is alleged to have kicked out at the Lobi Stars goalkeeper. Enditem
