CAIRO, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- South Sudanese President Salva Kiir arrived in Cairo on Wednesday for talks with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

During Kiir's two-day official visit, the two leaders are scheduled to discuss the development of bilateral relations in addition to a number of regional issues of mutual concern, MENA said.

South Sudan has been suffering a civil war over the past five years.

After its independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan saw the eruption of the domestic conflict in late 2013 when Kiir accused his former deputy and current arch rival Riek Machar of attempting a coup against him.

Kiir, Machar and several opposition groups signed a power-sharing deal in Ethiopia last September in an effort to push for lasting peace after years of civil unrest. Enditem
