DUBLIN, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 31.5 million passengers were handled by Ireland's largest airport Dublin Airport in 2018, setting a new record in its nearly 79-year-old history, according to the latest statistics released by the airport.

The 2018 passenger numbers were 6 percent higher than those of 2017, said the airport in a statement, adding that an additional 1.9 million passengers were received by the airport last year.

Continental European traffic, which is Dublin Airport's largest market, increased by 7 percent last year as almost 16.3 million passengers took flights to and from continental destinations, it said.

UK traffic increased by 1 percent with almost 10.1 million passengers travelling to and from UK airports last year while transatlantic traffic increased by 16 percent as Dublin Airport recorded more than 4 million passengers on North American routes during the same year, said the statement.

Other international traffic, which includes flights to Asia, the Middle East and Africa, increased by 17 percent to over 1 million passengers, it said.

To cope with its traffic growth, the airport plans to invest 900 million euros (about 1 billion U.S. dollars) in order to boost its annual passenger handling capacity to 40 millions, said Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

According to DAA, Dublin Airport handled a total of 29.6 million passengers in 2017, accounting for over 85 percent of the total handled by all the airports in Ireland. Enditem
