CAPE TOWN, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are news highlights in South African major media outlets on Thursday.

-- Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe on Wednesday announced the commencement of an independent survey in Xolobeni in the Eastern Cape province, where the community will decide if controversial mining will proceed in the area.(Independent Online)

-- Zimbabweans in South Africa on Wednesday called on President Cyril Ramaphosa's government to intervene in the deadly unrest in Zimbabwe.
