British stocks up 1.95 pct Friday

LONDON, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- British stocks rose on Friday, with the benchmark FTSE 100 Index up by 1.95 percent, or 133.41 points, to close at 6,968.33 points.

Ashtead Group, a British industrial equipment rental company, soared 4.49 percent, the top gainer of the blue chips. Melrose Industries and GVC increased by 4.43 percent and 4.00 percent, respectively.

Only three stocks fell on Friday. Ocado Group, an online grocer, was the worst performer in the blue chips, with its shares losing 1.91 percent. Fresnillo, a Mexican-based precious metals mining company, dropped 1.47 percent. Hikma Pharmaceuticals, a multinational pharmaceutical company, fell 0.16 percent. Enditem
