SANTIAGO, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- A 6.7-magnitude earthquake jolted the port city of Coquimbo in northern Chile late Saturday with no immediate casualties reported.

The quake struck at 10:32 p.m. local time (0132 GMT Sunday) with the epicenter some 13 km east of the town of Tongoy in the northern region of Coquimbo and 428 km north of capital Santiago, said the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile.

The focus of the tremor was located at a depth of 50.1 km. It was also felt strongly in northern Chile where buildings swayed.

There was no immediate report of damage.

Evacuation order for the coast near the city of Coquimbo was called off shortly after being issued by Chile's National Emergency Office.

The quake didn't have the characteristics that would trigger a tsunami, the authorities said.

Located in the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire," Chile is one of the countries with the most seismic activity in the world. Enditem
