KHARTOUM, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Sunday said infiltrators within the popular demonstrations are the ones who killed some protesters to ignite the crisis.

"Within the demonstrations, there are infiltrators who kill the protesters," said al-Bashir when addressing a mass rally Sunday at Al-Kireida area in Sudan's White Nile State, some 392 km southwest of the capital Khartoum.

"The doctor of Buri neighborhood was killed by a weapon not found with all the security bodies and it does not exist in Sudan," said al-Bashir.

He said that "there are followers of Abdul-Wahid Mohamed Nur (leader of Sudan Liberation Movement, an armed group in Darfur) who were arrested and confessed that their task is to kill the protesters to ignite the crisis."

Since last Dec. 19, various areas in Sudan, including Khartoum, have been witnessing popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.

According to government statistics, at least 26 people have been killed during the popular protests. Enditem
