BEIJING -- Chinese shares closed higher Monday after the country reported economic data for the year of 2018, which pointed to resiliency in the economy despite a complex external environment.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went up 0.56 percent to close at 2,610.51 points while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.59 percent higher at 7,626.24 points.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher on Monday.

The benchmark S&P, BSE Sensex closed at 36,578.96, up 192.35 points or 0.53 percent compared to its previous close at 36,386.61.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index on Monday moved up 4.61 points or 0.29 percent to close at 1,588.38 points.

Some 11.69 billion shares worth 45.13 billion baht (about 1.43 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Monday increased 0.11 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased 0.88 points, reaching 818.70 points after closing.

A total of 50,300 shares worth about 286.363 million Lao kip (nearly 33,590 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.12 percent, or 3.78 points, to close at 3,220.56.

A total of 1.79 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 916.71 million Singapore dollars (about 674.30 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 207 to 183.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 105.73 points, or 0.39 percent, to 27,196.54 points on Monday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,084.3 and 27,323.61. Turnover totaled 90.34 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 11.51 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 103.37 points on Monday, up 1.81 points or 1.78 percent from the previous trading session.

Nearly 37.2 million shares worth 477.9 billion Vietnamese dong (20.8 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Monday.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 911.05 points on Monday, up 8.75 points, or 0.97 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

Nearly 165.627 million shares worth 3.287 trillion Vietnamese dong (142.9 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, with prices of 161 stocks rising, 136 stocks decreasing, and 83 stocks remaining unchanged.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended almost unchanged Monday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) inched up 0.33 points, or 0.02 percent, to settle at 2,124.61. Trading volume stood at 392.7 million shares worth 5.2 trillion won (4.6 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.49 percent lower on Monday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 39.66 points to 8,007.46. The all-share index went down by 5.92 points, or 0.12 percent, to 4799.58.

Trading volume reached 1.98 billion shares worth 5.67 billion pesos (108.03 million U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday on the back of a solid lead from Wall Street late last week and China's strong retails sales data for December, but gains were erased by profit-taking after the Nikkei briefly hit a one-month high.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 53.26 points, or 0.26 percent, from Friday to close the day at 20,719.33.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 8.78 points, or 0.56 percent, higher at 1,566.37.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market finished higher on Monday, with support from the energy sector which benefited from higher commodity prices.

At the market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 10.80 points or 0.18 percent at 5,890.40, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 12.30 points or 0.21 percent at 5,953.50. Enditem
