MOSCOW -- A passenger was detained on Tuesday for attempting to hijack a Russian airliner en route from the Siberian city of Surgut to Moscow, the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement.

According to preliminary reports, an intoxicated man tried to break into the cockpit during the flight and threatened to use a weapon, demanding that the crew change the route, the statement said. (Russia-Hijacker)

MOSCOW -- A Russian Tu-22M3 bomber crashed Tuesday while making a hard landing at a military airfield in the northwestern Murmansk Region, killing two of four servicemen on board, local media reported.

The Tu-22M3 plane made a hard landing in heavy snowfall after completing a scheduled training flight, the Russian Defense Ministry was quoted as saying. The other two servicemen were injured. (Russia-Bomber-Crash)

MAIMANA -- A total of 10 militants including a commander Qari Zahir were killed as military aircraft targeted a Taliban hideout in Khawja Sabzposh district of northern Afghanistan's Faryab province on Tuesday, provincial police spokesman Abdul Karim Yurash said.

"Acting upon intelligence report, the government forces fighting aircraft pounded Taliban hideout in Sarai Qala area of Khawja Sabzposh district at 02:00 p.m. local time today killing 10 insurgents including notorious commander Qari Zahir on the spot and injuring three others," Yurash told Xinhua.
