ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on Tuesday strongly condemned an attack in Mali that killed 10 Chadian peacekeepers of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

At least 25 others were injured in the attack on Sunday morning in Aguelhok in Kidal region.

Extending his deepest condolences to the government of Chad and the families of the deceased, the chairperson urged the authorities in Mali and the signatory armed groups to the peace agreement to deploy every effort to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.

Faki has wished a swift recovery to the injured and extended his gratitude on behalf of the African continent for their courage.

The AU Commission chairperson also reiterated the AU's full support to and solidarity with the government of Mali in the efforts to bring durable peace for all its citizens.

Faki paid tribute to the courage of all peacekeepers on the African continent who continue to serve at great personal risk and sacrifice.

Mali is plagued by a civil war and the rise of Islamist militants. The UN set up a peacekeeping mission in Mali in April 2013 to help stabilize the situation in the country. Enditem
