RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- South American football governing body CONMEBOL is this week expected to confirm the use of the video assistant referee (VAR) at this year's Copa America.

The technology made its debut at the FIFA World Cup in Russia last year and has also been introduced in the top leagues in Spain, Italy and Germany.

According to Brazilian news website Globo Esporte, the decision to use the VAR at the 2019 Copa America will be announced during the tournament draw in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.

The world's oldest continental football tournament, the Copa America will be held in five Brazilian cities from June 14 to July 7.

This year's edition will include each of CONMEBOL's 10 member nations plus guests Japan and Qatar. Enditem
