NAIROBI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The following are the news highlights in Kenyan media outlets on Wednesday.

-- In a move to consolidate state power, and 14 months after he was sworn in for his final term, President Uhuru Kenyatta has made a surprise re-organization of the government and put Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i at the heart of government operations, in effect whittling down the influence of Deputy President William Ruto.

Through an Executive Order, President Kenyatta named Matiang'i chairman of the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee.(Daily Nation)

-- As speakers took turns to pay tribute to the gallant men who risked their lives to save their colleagues, there was pin drop silence in the church.

The congregation sat still, stiffened by grief, pain, loss and so much more. Citam Valley Road was yesterday predominantly filled with mourners in dull black and navy blue attires. Just a week ago, none of the people gathered at the church had imagined they would be congregating there yesterday. (Standard)

-- A physical head count of all police officers has been initiated to remove ghost workers from the payroll. The National Police Service audit involves capturing biometric details of all officers from General Duty and General Service Unit.

The officers are required to present to divisional heads their certified copies of IDs, letter of appointment, certificate of appointment, KRA pin, and badge of service. (Star) Enditem.
