MOSCOW, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- A district court in Russia's Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous region in western Siberia decided Wednesday to arrest a man who attempted to hijack a Russian airliner en route from the Siberian city of Surgut to Moscow, Russian media outlets reported.

Pavel Shapovalov, a 41-year-old resident of Surgut, tried to break into the cockpit during the flight on Tuesday and threatened to use a weapon, demanding that the crew change the route, which forced the plane to do an emergency landing in Khanty-Mansiysk, according to the Russian Investigative Committee.

"The court decides to choose a pre-trial restriction measure for Pavel Pavlovich Shapovalov in the form of custody for two months, until March 22, 2019," the court's judge Rinat Akhmetov was quoted by Tass news agency as saying.

The Investigative Committee said Wednesday in a statement that it charged the Shapovalov with hijacking of an aircraft and continued investigations with the aim to establish all the circumstances of the incident.

However, no explosives or weapons were found during the subsequent inspection of Shapovalov and of the aircraft, despite the suspect's claim.

Results of the medical examination of Shapovalov's blood showed no traces of narcotics, psychotropic substances or alcohol, and he will have to go through a psychological and psychiatric examination, the committee said. Enditem
