CANBERRA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Australia's peak consumer watchdog has urged National Broadband Network (NBN) customers who are experiencing slow internet speeds to seek refunds.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in 2017 found that half of NBN customers were not getting the internet speeds they were promised by internet service providers (ISPs).

The NBN is Australia's national wholesale open-access data network. The network has been plagued by problems since it was first announced in 2009.

Since the ACCC published those findings eight of Australia's largest ISPs have admitted the internet speeds they promised were false or misleading.

The ACCC told those ISPs they would not face repercussions if they contacted 142,000 affected customers and offered solutions.

However, ACCC Deputy Chairman Mick Keogh said that 94,000 customers still have not reached out to their providers.

"A large proportion, two in three affected consumers, have not responded to the letter or email," he told Fairfax Media on Wednesday night.

"They may be eligible for refunds, some in the hundreds of dollars," he said.

"The ACCC is urging NBN customers to contact their NBN retailer if they have received a letter or email offer of a remedy, or think they might be entitled to a remedy," he added. Enditem
