LUSAKA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Zambia on Wednesday declared three days of national mourning in honor of the country's former vice president who died early this week.

Lupando Mwape, who served as vice president under late President Levy Mwanawasa between 2004 and 2006 and was Zambia's ambassador to China between 2007 and 2009, died early Monday at the Arwyp Medical Centre in South Africa where he had been taken for specialized medical treatment.

In a statement, the government said three days of national mourning will be observed, starting from Friday when the remains of the former vice president are expected to arrive in the country.

The processes and logistics regarding the repatriation of Mwape's remains have been completed, said Zambia's High Commissioner to South Africa Emmanuel Mwamba, according to a separate statement. Enditem
